November 2004

Lots of stuff in the news to cover today:

Oh, how sad. And I didn't realize his wife is Susan Saint. James. Remember her? She was Kate on Kate & Allie.

Eeek! Godzilla!

It's a little scary to me that school policies are set because of what happens on a TV show.

Whew. What a relief. The line that made me laugh? "He's glad to eat." Indeed.

Bad headline. Really, really bad headline. Don't read it if you are eating....

...I told you so! Don't blame me. I warned you.

Boston Legal keeps getting better and better. She'll be a good addition. And I won't miss Lake Bell so-much.

No No No No! Oy. Enough with reality TV. Enough with Martha.

See? I told you there was a lot of stuff. I've had a most excellent birthday week thus far, thank you very much, with more celebrations to come. But now I have to get ready for work. Have a good day. Ciao.

Wow. I'd almost forgotten what 5 AM looked like.

Eeeek! How frightening. I couldn't remember exactly what Dick Ebersol did, until I read this article. Scary. Hope they find the youngest kid...

We've been unbelievably lucky so far in the snowfall department. Seems like everyone else is getting it. Sorry, guys. (I'm only gloating a little bit)

I don't see the harm in letting kids play poker. It does even up the playing field... geeks and jocks alike have an equal shot at winning.

I had a lovely dinner last night with 3/4 of the Pastor's Wives Club (darling Ms. Michaels was a little under the weather). I had Vietnamese meatball/noodle salad, a beer and a shot. How's THAT for appetizing? (I'm surprised that I'm not a little under the weather.) Seriously, it was yummy. Thanks, kidlets. I had an excellent time! And the reason for the gathering? Oh, yeah....

happy birthday to me!

Ah yes, 29.. and some months.... (the "some" gets to be "some more" every year). Have a most excellent day, Bellas. Ciao!

It's FINALLY snowing. Funny how once it starts, it just seems like it's always been around. Or maybe that's just me.

Because I'm too lazy to write about stuff, I'm just gonna post more pictures today.

Now that I've got my own version of the iPod Sock thing down, I can start working on variations.

And a couple of kitty pictures. It's their birthday today! They're 11 years old. Happy Birthday, Furballs! I'm not a crazy cat-woman, so I'm not having a party or buying them gifts or anything. Well, maybe just one new toy...

This is why there is barely room for me, sometimes.

When I'm on the iChat with Mac, Issy goes absolutely insane. He'll paw at the computer, and finally just lay on the keyboard. I guess he figures that it's the next best thing to a lap.

I'm going for a massage today - hot stones, the whole deal. I don't even care that it costs more than my vacuum, or that new sweater. It's been a while, and I need one.

Ciao, Bellas. Have a beautiful day.

The next two projects:

The pink furry scarf/hood. Yes, it IS as soft as it looks.

The iPod Sock! This was just a practice one, to get the pattern down. I'm working on the REAL one now - in pink, of course.

Looks like snow out there.. Welcome to winter. Ciao!

I'm thankful for good friends, good food, and for the fact that I will never have to wash dishes by hand again - EVER!

I'm going to veg out and watch a little TV. Tomorrow I'm going shopping - not at an all-too-early, insane hour. I'll wait until after lunch. Have a most excellent day. Ciao!

Happy Thanksgiving!

"You simply will not be the same person two months from now after consciously giving thanks each day for the abundance that exists in your life. And you will have set in motion an ancient spiritual law: the more you have and are grateful for, the more will be given you."
Sarah Ban Breathnach

Lemme just say - U2's new album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, is the BEST. Well worth the wait. I listened to it all day yesterday.. it's been a while since I just played an album over and over again. Excellent!

BuhBye, Dan Rather.

Check out Ruben's picture.. does he have the roundest head in the world or what?

Well, this guy is a little creepy. He's Sheryl Crow's "spiritual twin"? eeeeek!

Show of hands - who believes that this show will be on a year from now? Uh Huh. That's what I think, too.

Just in case you were wonder what Martha is up to...

When I buy a house, I don't want to worry about it skidding along the interstate. Think I'll just stick with a condo.

Have an excellent day, and we'll chat later. Ciao, Bellas.

We had just all settled in with our lattes and our knitting needles.. now, it was time to discuss Desperate Housewives. Then all the lights went out in the coffee shop! Geeks that we are, we continued to knit in the dark (well, we had cell phones and flashlights..). After about 20 minutes, when it became clear that the lights weren't going to come back on, we moved on to a new location.

Oh, for the LOVE of GOD. Eeeek. Let's cut HER arms off.

I agree with Moua - something made him snap. And they're saying that he's waaay too calm in jail.

Reason #57,921 to buy a Mac!

Whoo Hoo! The new U2 album comes out today. It's been a long time since I was really excited about a new release ::rushes to check iTunes::
YES! I've got it! Gotta love iTunes... no long lines, and they can't ever run out of downloads, can they??

Off to start the day. Ciao.

Good Morning..Zzzzzzz

Oh, yeah, I'm awake. I'm looking at the news. And this story about a hunting rampage in Wisconsin is all over our news today. You go nutty and murder people over sitting in a tree stand? Every day, I get closer and closer to never leaving the house...

National Treasure sounds an awful lot like DaVinci Code, doesn't it?

He should banned forever. Note to self: Don't go to basketball games unless I'm wearing full body armor.

Paul McCartney is the halftime show at the Superbowl. Good thing...he probably won't have any wardrobe malfunctions.

Speaking of football - The Vikings win one.. at last! We'll take any win we can get.

I'd forgotten that LAX was even on anymore... and now, well, not-so-much.

Time to go! Have a good day. Ciao.

Hey - Thanks for all the kind words and wishes yesterday. I wish you all lots of pennies from heaven today.

Ah, yes, the NBA. A real family sport. Don't get me wrong, I like a good hockey tussle as much as the next guy, but I've never seen one where the players are going after the fans! Did I mention how there will be no hockey this year? Not that I'm still bitter about it or anything..

I want to live to be 113 years old if I can still be shoveling snow off the roof, boogie-boarding and living on my own.

How about this? Let's be fair for everyone and ban marriage altogether? I still don't see why people care about who marries who. In what way does it possibly affect their everyday lives?

Heh.. Love the puffy shirt episode. I don't feel the need to buy the Seinfeld DVD, though.. I've watched every episode about 1000 times.

It looks like winter out there! Have to run a few errands (go to Caribou to get coffee, library, grocery store, etc. etc.), then I'm gonna curl up on a couch and knit for a while. Sounds like a good way to spend the day. Ciao, Bellas. Be good.

Oh, My Papa - Eddie Fisher

Oh, my papa, to me he was so wonderful
Oh, my papa, to me he was so good
No one could be, so gentle and so lovable
Oh, my papa, he always understood.

Gone are the days when he could take me on his knee
And with a smile he'd change my tears to laughter

Oh, my papa, so funny, so adorable
Always the clown so funny in his way
Oh, my papa, to me he was so wonderful
Deep in my heart I miss him so today.

Li manco giornalieri! Siete il papa migliore nel mondo, Mike.

My hair is a brand new color today, and trimmed up a little shorter, in the ever-elusive quest of getting it all back to one length again. Next time I want to cut it really short, someone should really stop me.

Good Lord - 9000 episodes! I haven't watched for YEARS.. but I'm guessing that if you gave me two weeks, I'd be all caught up again. Which is why I can't even start.

People's "Sexiest Men Alive" list is out. My take on some them (because I know you're saying "What do you think of them, chele?"):

Johnny Depp is okay.
Colin Farrell (who is NOT Will Ferrell) is also just okay.
I'm tired of Ben.
Hah?? Don Cheadle? I don't think so.
I somehow feel guilty for thinking that Jim Caviezel is sexy. C'mon.. he's JESUS.
Oh, yeah.. Jimmy Smits! :::swoons:::
Oh yeah Part 2. Gardner Guy from Desperate Houswives. (I never knew his name...)

The best part of this story is the name of the pawn shop: "Hock It To Me". Heh.

Have an excellent day! Ciao.

Good Morning.. It's scary-foggy out there.

How sad. She was there to HELP people. I heard on the radio that even the terrorist leaders called for her release. It's all madness.

Who needs weight watchers? take a nap, get a dog!

It's the perfect match - Desperate Housewives and Football.

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.

Um, what??

I won't ever have to go here to shop.

I knew it - exercise is bad for you.

Last night was the night of too much laundry. My reward? Tonight is the night of buying a holiday outfit! I haven't bought clothes in forever. So it's time for a little guilt free shopping.

Have a most excellent day. Ciao!

It's taking the coffee a while to kick in this morning. I'm so sleepy, it's hard to hold my arms up to type!

At last, they re-open the sidewalk in front of the White House. Then this happens.

I don't understand exactly how an eBay catalog would work. Their inventory would change daily, wouldn't it?

This story makes my teeth hurt. Too much candy!

In case you missed it, here's Anna Nicole Smith (AKA Drunk Girl) slurring her way through her presentation Sunday night at the American Music Awards.

Flu season is here.. Time to break out the Zicam. Seriously. Take it the MINUTE you feel a cold coming on, and you won't get sick. Promise.

And finally, five words: beef stew in the crockpot! Best ever comfort food, and healthy, too. Have a good day, Bellas. Ciao.

Good MORNING! I have enough cookies now to last for the entire holiday season.. YAY for the cookie exchange. The carpet is (mostly) clean - evidently their idea of totally clean and mine differs just slightly, but I can live with it for now. I might rent a rug doctor some weekend.

I'm just on the verge of OLD, I guess. I've heard of most of the artists that won. Mostly I was just sad that this show pre-empted Desperate Housewives and Boston Legal!

R.I.P. O.D.B.

We're not gonna talk about the game. We're just.not.gonna.talk.about.it.

Don't like violence and language? Don't watch this. Your TV does have an "off" button, or even the "change the channel" button, correct? Oy.

He's Popeye the Sailor Man! (now, if I only had an audio-blog, I could insert the laugh here. It's the ONE cartoon character voice I can actually do).

No, no, no. WHY do they have to make movies out of every book???

My hosting service was down yesterday morning for HOURS - that was the reason for the 404 error. Sorry about that, Dame!. I know how you hate having to read the actual paper for your news...
Time to start the week now. Have a good one! Ciao.

Yes, yes, very late in posting this morning. It's the second-to-last vacation Friday of the year. My goal is to get to 52 vacation days so I can take EVERY Friday off! And I'm nearly halfway there.
I'm waiting for Mr. Carpet-Cleaning Man to get here. The place is completely torn apart.. I've pushed, shoved, lifted and hidden all the not-heavy stuff that I want moved so they can clean the heavy traffic areas. The kitties completely hate this. Order and routine is very important in their little lives. Heh. Wonder where they get that?! (yeah, shut up Mare...)

Oh. My. God. If this is a real kidnapping, with people just standing around watching it all unfold... well... what's WRONG with people?!? Swear to God, I'm never leaving the house again. Thank God for Simon Delivers. At least I'll be able to eat.

What's next? Will they soon be teaching that Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy are real, too? (What? You mean they're not...?)

Note to self: time to find a rich white guy to accuse of abuse so I can shake him down and make a million dollars.

Oh, you mean it wasn't over already? (sorry. that one was just too easy, Hugh).

Just shut up and sing, okay?

People of Delaware: lock up your children!

Whoops. Don't break into our favorite TV shows. Even if it IS for important news. Our "stories" are much more important. We don't need to know what's going on in the world.

Gee... I'm actually in a GOOD mood today. You'd never know it by the Mrs. Saracasm tone of my ramblings, would ya?!?

Best Musical Ever. I'd pay a million times to see it.

And finally: Let's all go to Chilhowie, VA. Free Beer! Whoo Hoo!

Up to CuzGirl's tonight for burgers and slipper-felting, cookie party tomorrow, football Sunday... it's a whirlwind, glamourous life I lead. Ciao, Bellas. Be Good.

Eeeek. They're talking about wind chill already.

And take time today to Thank a Veteran for your freedom. Thanks, Mike!

It seems like this trial is never going to end. Lock him up and get it over with.

Ewwww. I think I just threw up a little...

This is what we need. Something else to distract us on our cellphones while we're driving.

Ewwww, Part Deux.

Ewwww, Part Three.

Note to self, when trying to commit insurance fraud, remember to use a different excuse each time.

I bought some Funky Fur yarn last night. I was going to do a scarf, but I think I'm going to make a collar/hood instead. Scarves don't work well with my big puffy jacket, but a collar would be just perfect. Time to start the day now. Be good. Ciao, Bellas.

Good Morning. What do you suppose is happening in the news today?

Gee, no matter how nutty my job gets, I've gotta say, I've never had to deal with this.

I get celebrities and singers mixed up. A lot. So it took me a couple read-thrus to realize that this is Colin Farrell, not Will Ferrell. Two different people, chele. Two different people.

I don't buy lots of DVDs... but honestly, I have to get these. The first two seasons of Pee-wee's Playhouse!! I loved that show. Sis3 and I lived in IGH when it was on, and we always had to get up early on Saturday mornings to watch. Gee. Seems like a zillion years ago.

It was great to see Onterrio Smith back on the field last week.

Hmm. this doesn't seem like a good idea at all. He should probably just stay in the hospital.

I was mostly a slug last night (well, I vacuumed).. but I finished the not-pastel-at-all baby blanket:

Tonight I've gotta bake up one more batch of cookies. It's all about being productive, you know..
Have an excellent day! Ciao.

I'm freezing! All wrapped up in the down comforter on the couch. The Vikings can't decide if they want to win or lose this game.

Best. Book. Ever. I found it at my favorite book store (I should have known to just look there first). I want to make every single project in this book. Well, maybe I'll hold off for a while on the Tankini, but I want to make MANY of the projects. This will keep me busy for a while.

Well, now it looks like the Vikings want to win again. And I just heard a big "whoop!" from the neighbor's place.

I hear Issy-Cat jumping around on the desk behind me. He's gonna make me get up off my warm couch, isn't he? Buona Sera.

I ran out to the MOA yesterday, and didn't spend one penny..how's THAT for some good discipline? The people watching was enough. And there was a pretty cool display of northern lights last night.. Dame! called to tell me about 'em, and I missed most of the first round. But I went out on the balcony just before I went to sleep, and caught just a glimpse of them. SO wild. They're supposed to be back again tonight.. I'm going to try to catch 'em on my digital camera.

I must admit, I won't miss all the bell ringers outside every Target store. I always give to the first few ringers I see.. then after I stop, I feel SO guilty. I always feel compelled to say "really, I gave to the guy that was here last week."

I rediscovered the crockpot this weekend. Made kick-ass chicken and rice casserole yesterday, and dug out the beef stew recipe for next week. I love winter cooking so much more than summer cooking - stew, casserole, lasagna... mmmm, gotta love those carbs! And yes, I got all 14 dozen cookies baked on Saturday. Because I am a glutton for punishment, I'm gonna make 4 dozen more on Tuesday. Tonight, of course, is knitting night.. and I have to get myself home in time to watch most of the Vikings game. It's the first game without Moss - now we'll see what the team is really made of.

And it's a new week! Here we go again. Ciao.

It's been a gorgeous weekend so far.. It had to be in the 60s yesterday when I was out running errands. I think that this global warming thing is the greatest! (of course I'm kidding.. sorta..). Anyway, it's another bright and sunny morning, although not quite so warm as yesterday. The Vikings don't play until tomorrow, so I'm going to run around and do some shopping today.

And I didn't forget - here's a picture of the latest project:

(I made the slippers, not the cat)

Have a great day. Ciao, Bellas.

A rare late-evening post, because I'm sitting amongst piles of laundry that I don't feel like putting away, I'm thinking about all the cookies I have to bake tomorrow and I'm just feeling - well - I don't know what exactly I'm feeling. But I did feel like writing.

It's been a tough week - hell, this is gonna be a tough month. November used to be my favorite month... I'd count down ALL year to my birthday! Now November is the month that my dad died (10 days before my birthday... your timing wasn't the greatest, Dad!), and the month when the holidays start. I used to love the holidays, too. At our stores, I was the one who put up all the trees and decorations. But then dad died, and soon after that I was unceremoniously tossed from the family. Now most of the time, the holiday season is the time of year when I'm most reminded of the things I've lost.

But I don't mean for this to be a bummer post! I'm reflecting tonight on what I learned from going through all that: That I'm remarkably strong. That nothing - not being disowned, not cancer, not any loss of family or friends I've ever had - nothing will ever get the better of me. That I have the most remarkable group of friends who love and support me. (yeah, I'm looking at YOU, Pastor'sWives...). And that all things happen in my life for a reason.

Tell ya what - I'm going to just leave all the piles of laundry out here in the living room. I'm going to put on my newly made grey fuzzy feet slippers (yep - another pair done. pictures to follow, tomorrow, probably), I'm going to make myself a peanut butter samich and climb into bed and watch TV. And the cool thing is, I get to wake up tomorrow morning and do it all over again.

Buona Sera, Bellas.

Even with a day off for the flu this week... it's been a long week. Glad it's Friday! Part of this weekend is going to be all about cookie-making. I have to bake 14 dozen snickerdoodles (fun to eat, fun to say) for the cookie exchange next week. The cool thing is, though, that I'll get 13 dozen different kinds of cookies in return. Whoo hoo! No - not all for ME to eat... they'll get me through all holiday parties, potlucks and food-gifts for the whole season. And that other - thing - from yesterday? Thanks for wishes and thoughts.. it'll be okay.

At various times during the day yesterday, they kept reporting that Arafat had already died. I was surprised this morning to hear that he hadn't.

Elizabeth Edwards had a bad day on Wednesday. But it sounds like they caught it in time. Good luck to her. Self exams = Very Important.

Barak Obama was elected. (I just like the way his name sounds.. it's fun to say!)

Eeeek! We're all gonna be too fat to fly soon! (did I mention I didn't go to McDonald's at all this week? and that I'm never going there again?)

So yeah. Onward and upward. or something-ward. Have an adequate day. Ciao.

Good (?) Morning...
It's good that all the campaign stuff is over. Can we all please just get along now?

It's a sad day for hockey. RIP Sergei Zholtok.

Get well soon, Patty Duke.

Is it wrong that I really want to watch this TV special about Martha Stewart behind bars?

I'm over the flu, thank you. But I'm tired and I've got a new crisis du jour to keep me busy for the next couple of days. It'll be fine, though, it always is. But if you think of it, send some good thoughts my way. Ciao.

Well, I'm up. My stomach hurts, but I think it'll stay settled. I went to bed with a fever, but that's down this morning. So the plan is to go into work for the morning, anyway.

I stayed up until almost midnight last night, watching election returns. I guess the days of knowing the clear winner the next morning are over, aren't they? All the networks are being ultra-cautious about declaring a winner.

And yay for us here in Minnesota.. where 70% of us turned out to vote.

The only other thing that happened in the whole world yesterday was that First Avenue closed its doors. It sounds like they're trying to bring it back in some form.. I hope so. Lots of good memories in that old black building.

I'm gonna keep one eye on the news all day. I'm also gonna try to eat something more substantial than just soup, and to remain upright! I'll let you know how I do. Ciao.

It's been about 3 hours now, and my stomach seems to have settled down. I'm still really ache-y and I think I have a little fever, but I'll probably live. ::smile:: Ah, the drama!

I did get off the couch long enough to get to my polling place. There wasn't a line at all. I felt better for having done that. It took everything out of me, though. I had to take a nap when I got home.

I just had some soup, and I'm settled back on the couch for the night. I'm going to watch election returns and knit.. and maybe nap, too. I'm going to see how I feel tomorrow when I wake up - I might go in to work for just the morning.

That's what I know so far.. Time to rest. Ciao.

And.... yes, she's a sick girl today. Not long after I posted that, I thought I'd have just one more cup of coffee - then, well, blecccch! I felt a little 'off' last night, too. I realize now that I have a fever, too. So I'm bundled up on the couch with my blankets and the kitties and my laptop. I have to figure out how and when I can drag my sorry ass over to the poll..luckily, it's only about 3 blocks away. MUCH later, though. Right now I can't even stand upright.

I'm a big ol' whiner baby right now. I hate the flu.

VOTE people, please! For the love of God! I'm begging you! Not because I've turned into a huge politics girl, but because I'm so sick and tired of this. Let's get a new president (whomever that might be) and then just get back to the business of daily life without the debates and arguments and accusations and mud-slinging and finger-pointing.

Besides, it's our duty. And it's our right. Ciao.

Happy November! And if it's a new month, that must mean that there's a new list. This month we're doing the
Top 10 Road Trip Songs (or really, songs that talk about travel of some sort.. mine is about modes of travel.)
Here's the chelelist, in no particular order:

1. Counting Blue Cars - Dishwalla
I liked the song the first time I heard it... but mostly, I just like saying "Dishwalla".

2. Bicycle Race - Queen
The song gets mentioned because it SOUNDS like riding a bike! It's got that circular sound thing going: "i WANT to ride my BIcycle, i WANT to ride my BIKE"... Face it - it's the closest I'll ever get to getting on a bike again!

The next two songs are my "hangs-her-head-in-shame" picks:
3. Calypso - John Denver
Mock me if you must.. I STILL love this song. It's about Jacques Cousteau's ship. and besides, if I can't have a Judas Priest song on my list, I should have a song that features John Denver yodelling...

4. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot
This song came out when I was in high school, and a bunch of us used to hang out at a friend's family's cabin up on Lake Superior. We'd listen to this song for HOURS on end, and watch storms roll in over the lake. Yes, I was a geek. I'm much cooler now. Heh.

5. Urge for Going - Joni Mitchell
It's my favorite running away song. Plus, best fall-into-winter lyric ever: Now the warriors of winter, they give a cold triumphant shout. And all that stays is dying, all that lives is getting out. See the geese in chevron flight, flapping and a-racin' on before the snow. They got the urge for going and they've got the wings so they can go.

6. Unknown Legend - Neil Young
"Somewhere on a desert highway, she rides a Harley-Davidson. Her long blong hair flying in the wind. She's been running half her life. The chrome and steel she rides colliding with the very air she breathes, the air she breathes." If you ever just wake up one day and find cheleblog gone, well, that's where I am. Except for maybe the long blond hair part...

7. Baby, You Can Sleep While I Drive - Melissa Etheridge
This song always makes me tear up a little bit. So poignant.

8. Silver Thunderbird - Marc Cohn
And speaking of tearing up.. This IS my dad's song (even though he had a Cadillac). The line in the song that gets me every time: "You could hardly even see him in all that chrome - the plan with the plan and the pocket comb." My dad was shorter than ME (and I'm a very tiny woman), and I loved how he'd just get swallowed up by his big ol' car.

9. Airplane - Indigo Girls
It wouldn't be a chelelist without my Indigo Girls! Besides, it captures my fear of flying perfectly: "Up on the airplane, nearer my God to thee. I start making a deal inspired by gravity".. That's me, all right: Oh God, if you just let the plane land without crashing I'll NEVER drink or swear again.... (I sure hope he has a sense of humor, or a short memory).

10. Radar Love - Golden Earring
I love the faster-and-faster-and-faster beat of this song. In fact, that song was playing when I got TWO of my speeding tickets. I never play it in the car anymore...
